Child Health Statistics

Current statistics on Child Health issues include:

One in ten children in the UK aged between 5 to 16 have a mental disorder

Boys are more likely to have a mental disorder than girls

Only 1 in 200 of all cancers occur in children aged under 15 years

Cancer accounts for approximately 20% of all deaths in children aged 1 to 14 years

A third of all childhood cancer are leukaemias; a quarter are brain and spinal tumours; and, 15% of cases are embryonal tumours

In 2007/8 there were over 12,000 child protection referrals which is 4% higher than the previous year

Although death in childhood is rare, mortality rates are highest amongst children under 1 years of age with a rate of 49.6 deaths per 10,000 population. This equates to more than half of the total deaths occurring in children under 15 years of age (266 out of 395)

Asthma is a leading chronic disease among children

One in ten children are overweight. This means approximately 155 million school-age children worldwide are overweight or obese, according to the latest estimates from the International Obesity TaskForce
